Chris Hani’s Killer Janusz Walus Stabbed in Jail

Just when Janusz Walus could see the gate that he was going to use to get out of prison, it has now emerged that Chris Hani’s killer has been stabbed at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria on Tuesday, 29 November 2022.

The news of his stabbing comes just a week after the constitutional court ruled that he be released on parole, following many failed attempts.

On Tuesday, Department of Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said, “The Department (DCS) can confirm an unfortunate stabbing incident involving inmate Janusz Walus.

“A detailed incident report is to be provided at a later stage, but what can be stated at this point is that inmate Walus is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care.

“It is alleged that Walus was stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit.

“Stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment and this case will be investigated.”

The constitutional court ruling has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many, including the ANC, SACP as well as the Hani family.

Chris Hani’s widow, Mme Limpho Hani was visibly gatvol after the ruling was delivered last week.

During a TV interview, she said: “I have been in courts, in and out, and Walus has all the cases. Now he comes here (Constitutional court) because in South Africa they (Constitutional court Justices) are Gods and what they say goes.”

She added: “I wish them the best, do you know about karma? Watch the space, I give all of them two years.”

She also labelled the judgment diabolical and accused Chief Justice Raymond Zondo of indirectly saying that Walus did well by killing her husband.

On Monday 28 November, the Hani family and the City of Ekurhuleni learned with shock that the Chris Hani Memorial Site at the Thomas Nkobi Cemetery in Boksburg had been vandalised.

Ekurhuleni spokesman Zweli Dlamini said that the vandalism to the ‘Four Pillars of the ANC struggle’ portion of the facility and the Information Centre and kiosk was discovered by municipal officials on Monday.

The facility was officially opened by former President Jacob Zuma in 2015.

He added: “What makes the situation even more puzzling is the timing of the incident considering the recent judgement by the Constitutional Court on the case.

“Such incidents are extremely regrettable. The city is doing its best to preserve its rich heritage, but there seem to be some people out there who are hellbent on ensuring this does not happen”, Dlamini said.
