Swinney calls for 'patience'

John Swinney has appealed for "patience" as work is carried out to restore power and transport services across Scotland in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn.

Posting on X, the first minister said power company staff and public servants were "working at speed" to restore services.

As mentioned in our last post, there are still thousands of homes across Scotland without power.

The inclement weather is likely to continue too, with new yellow weather warnings for wind, snow and ice in place today and tomorrow (see 10.31am post).

'Considerable progress' being made to bring power back to Scottish homes

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is continuing its "massive operation" to reconnect customers across the country in the wake of Storm Eowyn.

In an update this morning, it said almost 70,000 of its customers have been reconnected and work is progressing to restore supplies to close to 20,000 more.

"Eowyn was an exceptional storm, and our massive operation continues today to respond to the huge amount of damage it's caused to the electricity network," said SSEN official Andy Smith.

He said now that wind speeds have finally dropped, crews have been able to work through the night and since first light to restore power to customers.

"The vastly increased teams we've deployed will get many more homes back on supply today, but in some cases, including in more remote areas, it will take a few days to fix all faults," added Smith.

Co-op building collapses in Scotland after Storm Eowyn

Here are some images of a Co-op store in Scotland that collapsed yesterday after Storm Eowyn passed through Denny, Falkirk.

The shop was badly damaged by the high winds that left part of the building's interior exposed.

Engineers have now secured the site, placing cones around a huge pile of debris left on the floor next to the building.

Celtic FC have decided to postpone their match against Dundee due to storm-inflicted damage at its stadium.

Helicopter used to locate debris on Scottish railways

Network Rail Scotland has just released an image of debris on one of its railways that it says has suspended trains running to and from Glasgow Queen Street.

The rail provider says its air operations team have spotted a roof from a nearby building on the track.

"Until this is removed, we can't run trains to or from the station," it says.

'Huge amount' of work needed to fix destruction caused by Eowyn, says Martin

Irish premier Micheal Martin says there is still a "huge amount" of work needed in the days ahead to restore electricity, water and communications to hundreds of thousands of people across Ireland.

He said the destruction caused by Storm Eowyn's record-breaking winds "has been unprecedented".

Thanking emergency crews and responders working to restore power and clear roads, Martin said "every effort" was being made to get homes reconnected and water supplies secured.

"I'm grateful for the efforts of multiple state agencies to help those most in need, and we understand how difficult it is for homes and businesses across the island," he added.
