Our Europe correspondent Siobhan Robbins said reports have quoted eyewitnesses, who say police may have shot at the car window, possibly to gain access.

Police have not confirmed if any shots were fired.

 

'At least 20 injured' in incident - with some 'critical'

Citing the Munich fire brigade, news site Focus reports at least 20 people have been injured.

Some of those have been critically hurt, it adds.

Police say emergency services are treating around 20 injured people, but say they currently have no information on how many are seriously hurt. 

They say rescue helicopters are in operation.

 

Firefighters on scene as officers investigate Mini

The latest images from the scene in Munich show several police officers and firefighters, with an ambulance there as well.

Investigators can be seen looking around a Mini in the middle of the street.

 

Where the attack took place

The incident happened in Munich, which is in southern Germany.

Specifically, police say they are on the scene in a street called Seidlstrasse in the central area of the city.

As we've been reporting, the Munich Security Conference is on this weekend, and that's taking place about a kilometre and a half away from the site of this incident.

Driver of Mini sped into crowd

Details are quickly emerging from the scene of the crash, but much remains unclear at this stage.

According to Bild, the driver of a Mini Cooper is said to have sped into the demonstrators at about 10.30am local time (9.30am London).

Police are now investigating if the driver crashed into the crowd intentionally or confused the accelerator and brake.

People left 'crying and shaking'

People were "crying and shaking" after the incident, according to a reporter who was on the scene in Munich.

Journalist Sandra Demmelhuber said a car drove into the demonstration, with a person left "lying on the street" and a "young man taken away" by police.

The union, Verdi, says it does not have any information on the incident.

 

Driver detained by police

Police have just said the driver has been "secured on site" and "currently poses no further danger".

Officers have not given any further information around the driver.

They added there will be disruption to traffic around the scene.

 

Car hit rally organised by union, report says

More from the Bild newspaper now, which reports the group of people struck appeared to be at a rally organised by a union called Verdi.

Another local broadcaster reports the victims were taking part in a strike.

"We are on site with strong forces for you," Munich police posted on social media.

Bild newspaper reports 15 have been injured, while the police force said "several" have been hurt.

The Munich Security Conference is due to start tomorrow, with US vice president JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arriving later today.

There is a large-scale police operation under way near the central train station, a spokesperson said without giving further details.

Officers are working to verify what has happened.
