It’s no secret that Liverpool have been miles of the pace this season. They currently sit ninth and are 21 points behind Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp reached an unbelievable peak with this Liverpool side, but it now seems as if the cycle of this squad has come to an end.

There are certainly some players within the squad who are good enough to go again, but a summer rebuild feels increasingly likely as things stand.

Murphy has identified where Klopp’s side have been going wrong this season and has named the players who should be moved on.

“We’re talking about a team that was not far off winning the quadruple last season,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“They don’t look at it. They don’t look like they’ve got much legs, or got much hunger. They’re missing players, of course they are. But they had some of those players at the beginning of the season, and results were the same.”

At the same stage of last season, Liverpool were 12 points better off than they are this time around. They had also scored 16 more goals and kept things much tighter at the back.

“I think there’s a rebuild needed,” the former Liverpool midfielder adds. “And by that I mean players out the door and a few more in. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is out of contract, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Naby Keita go.

“I’m not sure James Milner is going to stay for another year. If he does, he won’t be playing much. That’s three midfielders (leaving). The midfield needs freshening up.”

It was a surprise that Liverpool didn’t opt to sign a midfielder in January. While they will be eyeing an ambitious swoop for Jude Bellingham in the summer, they need options now.

Coady Gakpo was their only signing in the January window. Their choice to not invest into a midfielder in January could cost them in the second half of the season.

“I don’t want to disappoint anybody but we signed an outstanding player like Cody Gakpo and the next thing you can read is, ‘Who next?'” Klopp told reporters.

“We cannot play like Monopoly. We never did. It is a big part of my philosophy, working full of faith and trust with the players we have and not constantly questioning them by telling them that we need another player in their position.”

Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Wolves in the Premier League as they will be looking to get back to winning ways.
