Wegovy weight loss jab to launch at UK pharmacies

A weight loss jab used by some Hollywood A-listers is set to launch at pharmacies in the UK from the spring.

The drug known as Wegovy or Semaglutide is said to suppress appetite and convince the body that it is full.

A spokesperson from Boots told Sky News that the medication can be effective "to achieve sustained weight loss when used alongside a reduced calorie diet, increased physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices".

However, the drug is not as easily accessible, with it having to be prescribed and dispensed based on assessment.

Boots said people will have to go through their Online Doctor service to get the medication - a service that will launch in the spring.

The service has been set up to support and help customers who are worried about their weight impacting their health.

The chemist said that customers will have access to treatment, following their completion of an online consultation form, which will be assessed by a clinician.

What is Wegovy and who can access it?

Made by Novo Nordisk, Wegovy has now been licenced in the UK specifically for weight loss and weight maintenance.

The drug is for those who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over - or a BMI of 27 or over with health conditions related to weight.

Meanwhile, Boots said it offered a follow-up and support package to customers which can be accessed on their Online Doctor Weight Loss Treatment service.

"We will soon introduce a free, 10-week weight loss programme for patients to complete alongside their treatment," it said.

Last year, pharmacies offered an NHS weight-loss programme to help people with weight loss.

The 12-week plan included tailored a diet and exercise plan.
